SAMSON has launched the TROVIS 3797 Positioner, the world's first certified positioner with Ethernet-APL technology available on the market. Following its successful certification, the positioner is now ready for use in the field. Digital communication throughout the network between field devices, the process control system and asset management system is possible through the use of proven fieldbus cables (type A according to IEC 61158-2). The certified device is a key component for the digitalization of the process field level.
Ethernet-APL (Advanced Physical Layer) was developed specifically for the process industry. The technology combines the power supply and data transmission over a single two-wire cable – even in hazardous areas and over distances up to1000 meters. The TROVIS 3797 Positioner uses PROFINET, an Ethernet-based protocol according to PA Profile 4 while, at the same time, also allows the use of open communication channels such as OPC UA.
Thanks to the direct Ethernet-APL technology, the process control system can access configuration, diagnostic and process data almost in real time. Positioners are automatically detected and can be configured and calibrated remotely. Software updates can also be installed remotely. Device replacement and documentation are much easier as well. TROVIS 3797 means less work for employees, which is particularly important in times when qualified staff is hard to come by.
Each TROVIS 3797 Positioner has its own digital twin. Digital nameplates provide a unique identification of the valve and actuator. The non-contact travel sensing system works free of wear, a tight-closing function monitors the zero point and pressure sensors control the supply air and signal pressure. The air capacity can be adjusted over software, even from the control station.
The positioner is suitable for use with all SAMSON valves as well any valves with NAMUR attachment options. Adapters are available to easily mount the positioner onto third-party linear and rotary actuators.
The development of the TROVIS 3797 started in 2019 with a series of field tests in a large-scale chemical plant. Extensive load tests involving around 240 devices and several different process control systems were conducted to verify the reliability of the Ethernet-APL technology under realistic conditions.
Right from the very start when the Ethernet-APL Consortium was founded in 2018, SAMSON was involved as an industry partner in the development of the technology and active member of the steering committee. The certified TROVIS 3797 showcases the innovative strength of SAMSON and helps drive forward digitalization within the process industry.
SAMSON AG develops and manufactures control valves and automated control solutions for industrial processes. SAMSON valves precisely control the flow of liquids, gases and steam in industries, such as chemicals and petrochemicals, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, energy generation and distribution. Represented all across the world by roughly 5,000 members of staff and sites in more than 40 countries, SAMSON is a leading supplier of industrial valves and process automation.
